Chair One is a pared back solid wood chair with an extreme visual levity. “We started from a stress diagram, a little like Jean Prouvé and the design of his furniture. An idea of designing at the limit where comfort appears as a surprise,” explains Manuel. The chair reflects Manuel's approach to architecture: honest materiality, bold yet timeless, innovative yet connected to the past, and an interplay of volume and void.

Manuel Aires Mateus

Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus was born in Lisbon in 1963, graduated as architect at the Faculty of Architectu re U.T.L. in 1986. He collaborates with his brother Francisco Aires Mateus, since 1988 and together they founded AIRES MATEUS. He teaches, since 1986, in several universities. A number of distinctive elements can be recognized in the architectures by brothers Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus.
