Designing lamps that stand the test of time has been a central design principle at Louis Poulsen , ever since teaming up with lighting design mastermind Poul Henningsen in the 1920s. To continue this proud 100-year-long tradition, Louis Poulsen is exploring ways to build on the inherent longevity of these products. With a firm belief in recycling and upcycling, Louis Poulsen is continuously working on new ways of reusing products and materials. This includes transforming flawed products into treasured new lamps. The raw PH 5 Retake, which is based on the classic, best-selling PH 5, is a perfect example. The transition process from a vintage or imperfect PH 5—for example, with a dent or slight surface irregularities—to a one-of-a-kind PH 5 Retake involves removing the paint from each pendant. This allows the aesthetics of the aluminium shades and the lower steel shade to emerge with remarkable raw nuances. At the end of the process, the PH 5 Retake is coated with a dry lubricant to protect its metal parts. Without further treatment, the metal will patinate beautifully over time, giving each pendant its own characteristic expression.

Light concept:
The fixture provides a comfortable, glare-free light, based on the principle of Poul Henningsen’s reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. It emits a lateral light as well as illuminating itself, providing a soft radiance from within its core. The fixture is a retake on a classical PH 5 and has been stripped of all its previous paint, thus appearing raw and untouched. The bare metal inner shades give a particularly gentle light reflection, delivering a warm and cosy ambience. The lower shade is furthermore fitted with a frosted diffuser glass to ensure that the downward directed light is 100% glare-free.

Materials:
Lower shade: Spun steel. Other shades: Spun aluminium. Struts: Rolled aluminium. Diffuser: Frosted glass.

Finish:
The metal surface is raw after being stripped of former paint. As a result of the stripping process the finish of the aluminium surface naturally varies in darker and lighter tones. The lower shade made of steel has a different surface and may appear with occasional rust.

Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen by the famous Danish writer. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen. He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his interests focus mainly on lighting. He is the legendary creator of the lighting series carrying his name; PH. He can be said to be the world’s first lighting architect. PH devoted his entire career to investigating the importance of light for our well being.
